The Story of Silver Bullet

Ep. 243 is live!

Hey-ho, gang! Week three of Howl-O-Ween is here and I feel damn good about this week’s subject! In this week’s episode, The Boys and I discuss one of my absolute favorite werewolf movies…1985’s Silver Bullet. Based on Steven King’s novella, Cycle of the Werewolf, the movie utilizes one of the best storytelling methods of 1980’s cinema: kids having an adventure. Now, it should be noted this adventure is a bit more scary and bloody than the typical fair of the day. That is, however, part of what makes this movie work. Seeing things from Marty’s perspective is believable thanks to the raw talent of a young Corey Haim, the jarring and unsettling performance by Everett McGill as Reverend Lowe AND The Werewolf, the over dramatic flair of Megan Follow’s Jane, and of course…Gary Busey’s Uncle Red. Who of us honestly didn’t have an Uncle Red type growing up?

Now this movie can’t be called perfect. It does have it’s flaws, of which we speak to in the episode. There’s some plot and pacing issues, but they aren’t terrible. I do feel like the Werewolf costume gets too much criticism at times, but after 1981’s An American Werewolf in London…I can see where people are coming from. Still, the transformation scenes are pretty solid!

That is going to wrap things up this week for Yesterdaze, but please join us next time as we close out Howl-O-Ween month with an oft forgotten piece of early original Fox programming…Werewolf, the television series from 1987. Bare in mind, Next week is Halloween, and we have a lot of action brewing here at Hoovmanor. That said, there is the distinct possibility there may not be much of a write up to go along with Werewolf. Nevertheless, we hope you enjoy it! In the meantime, I do hope you enjoyed our revisit of Silver Bullet, we’ll see you next time! And as always…Thanks, and Enjoy!
