ThunderCats 2011
Ep. 217 is live!
And now for something a bit different...This week we blast out of the 80's, straight past the 90's, and just outside the aughts to the year 2011. "But Derek! 2011 certainly isn't retro! How can you do this?!" Well, when you make the rules anything is possible, really. More importantly, though, this show should be discussed as it does see Larry Kenney once again being a part of the Thundercats lore. This time, however, he steps into the role of Lion-O's father, King Claudus. Furthermore, from a "historian" point of view, it bears importance as this project would be the last effort between the legendary team of Rankin/Bass as Arthur Rankin Jr would pass in 2014, and Jules Bass would pass in 2022. Finally, I wanted to include this property because had this show gone on we very likely would have finally seen the accidental trilogy of Thundercats, SilverHawks, and TigerSharks come together in one show, one shared universe. This of course is hinted at in Episode 7 of the series, Legacy.
Having said that, this write up comes to a close rather quickly. I'm afraid I just don't have much more to say regarding the series, other than it is a bummer it never got a chance to bring additional stories to light, and it stands as a more modern example of how all the best planning, strong market research, and outstanding creativity can all come together...and still fail due to poor execution and timing (ie: Bravestarr). Perhaps, in time, we can see a proper Thundercats reboot that possibly joins them with the SilverHawks (yes, I know Nacelle has something in the works, but until it's officially underway and work is being completed, I'm not holding my breath) and TigerSharks. If they could do it for a traveling stage show, why not in animated form, too? That will wrap it up for Yesterdaze this week...Next week is the big show, the moment many have been waiting for, as well as having me bugging out. Our fifth week event debuts next Monday, "An Evening With Larry Kenney." I truly cannot wait. Thanks for tuning in, we'll see you next monday and as always...Thanks, and Enjoy! -Derek
