The Story of Camp Candy
Ep. 229 is live!
It’s been a week of overtime, hard work at home, and stress aplenty. Shawna’s mom is here, and I’ve been busier than a cat trying to bury a turd on a marble floor! So…let’s get to it! This week’s episode brought perennial comedic 80s mainstay John Candy to our living rooms every Saturday for THREE YEARS on NBC. I was honestly shocked to realize Camp Candy had three seasons! What's more, Camp Candy’s final season would also signal the beginning of the end for Saturday Morning Cartoons as us Gen Xers and early Millennials knew them. Fall 1992 would be NBC’s final Saturday Morning Cartoon line up, as they would officially boot said programming block, the first of the “Big Three” networks to do so. It’s understandable, seeing as how the writing was on the wall with the rising availability of cable networks, and the success of Fox Kids programming. All of that being said, not only is it impressive that a celebrity driven show managed to make it for three seasons, it managed to do so with very little product in the toy aisles. As seen below, the only products we really found were two puzzles, and a lunchbox. That’s really it, or at the very least that’s all that’s managed to make it to eBay. Nevertheless, the show is remembered by many, and naturally John Candy was a pretty solid draw for us kids as we had become familiar with him by way of such flicks as Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors. It was certainly more successful than The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley. Cutting off short this week, too many pokers in the fire. We certainly hope you are enjoying your summer, I know we are working hard to have everything lined up to hopefully give ourselves a little break. That is going to wrap things up for Yesterdaze this week, enjoy the episode, and come back next week for more Campsite fun by way of Salute Your Shorts! Thanks, and enjoy! -Derek
